UST completes the Final Four

The University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers claimed the last position in the Final Four as they subdued a gritty Far Eastern University Tamaraws, 77-73, in the homestretch of the UAAP Season 74 eliminations phase at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, Thursday, Sep. 8.
Rookie Kevin Ferrer and veteran Jeric Fortuna led the Tigers in crucial late-game clutches while Karim Abdul finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds to save the day for UST and tie with the Tamaraws at third spot in the win-lose ladder.
The España five led by as much as 18 points in the first half but FEU's Roger Pogoy and Chris Exciminiano came out of nowhere, conniving for 16 third-quarter points to cut the lead of UST to only two before the fourth quarter, 55-53.
"We should be composed lalo na 'pag naghahabol ang kalaban," said UST mentor Pido Jarencio. "We learned our lesson from the first round."
Already assured of a Final Four slot when the Archers dropped their do-or-die game earlier, the Tigers strode confidently on court as the two Jerics, Fortuna and Teng, scored seven and six points early to end the first quarter with a 12 point cushion, 23-11.
Abdul then found his rhythm in the second canto as he dominated the paint, scoring nine of his 20 points to enter the dugout with a 45-32 lead for UST.
FEU fights the good fight
But the Tamaraws returned with a vengeance in the third as they outscored UST, 21-10, courtesy of rookie Pogoy and hotshot point guard Exciminiano.
Entering the final quarter down by just two, reigning MVP Ryan Roose Garcia caught fire early in the fourth, sinking a couple of critical jumpers to steal the lead, 69-66. The Tigers then turned to Chris Camus who scored five of his nine points in the quarter to regain the driver's seat with the clock ticking down.
The UST triad of Abdul, Ferrer, and Fortuna proved to be too hot to handle as they thwarted every FEU attempt to steal the game with steady shooting from the foul line.
UST's defensive plan
"Sa mga players ito, eh. Guide lang nila ako. Sila ang nagpanalo," added Jarencio whose defensive plan limited FEU in the dying moments of the game.
Ferrer tallied in 19 points and 12 rebounds while Fortuna scored 19 on a woeful two-of-seven from the three-point territory.
Garcia on the other hand top-scored for FEU with a quiet double-double in 17 points and 10 rebounds while Pogoy scored his season-high 14 points on top of six rebounds and two steals.
The Tigers can force a playoff for the Number 2 spot if they tie with the Adamson Falcons at 9-5.
The scores
UST 77: Adbul 20, Ferrer 19, Fortuna 14, Teng 11, Camus 9, Vigil 2, Lo 2, Tan 0, Sheriff 0, Lao 0, Pe 0, Ungria 0.
FEU 73: Garcia 17, Pogoy 14, Romeo 12, Exciminiano 10, Ramos 8, Tolomia 6, Escoto 3, Foronda 3, Cruz 0, Bringas 0.

NBA player Smith in talks for record China deal: report

NBA free agent guard J.R. Smith is near a deal to play the coming season for Shanxi of the Chinese Basketball Association for a Chinese league-record $3 million, Yahoo Sports reported Thursday.
Citing unnamed sources, the website reported that seven-year NBA standout Smith, who turns 26 on Friday, would lose his chance at unrestricted free agency ahead of the NBA season if he makes the deal to play in China.
Smith, who played for the Denver Nuggets the past five seasons, has averaged 12.5 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists a game over his NBA career.
The news comes as NBA players and club owners meet to try and reach a deal to end a lockout by owners that has shut down the league for the first time since 1999 and threatens to wipe out all or part of the season set to open November 1.
The Nuggets have already lost forward Wilson Chandler to China's Zhejiang Guangsha and Smith, like Chandler, would not be able to sign with NBA clubs until they return from China.
Chinese clubs no longer sign NBA players who want opt out clauses to return to North America before the Chinese season ends in March.

NU chases La Salle out of Final Four

After getting booted out of the Final Four race last weekend, National University made sure it dragged De La Salle down with them to the pit of also-rans.
In an emphatic 56-40 victory in today's Season 74 UAAP game at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, the NU Bulldogs
crushed the DLSU Green Archers in the fourth with a game-closing 20-1 blast. It was NU's fifth win in 13 games, which tied them with La Salle at fifth place.
"Our mindset was to play as if we were trying to qualify for the Final Four," NU Coach Eric Altamirano told reporters. "We wanted to earn again the respect of the league."
With La Salle leading 39-36 with seven minutes remaining, rookies Bobby Ray Parks and Kyle Neypes led an onslaught that turned the game around and sent the Archers reeling to their second absence from the semifinals in the last three seasons.
Archers snag second-lowest output of season
Parks, sizzling in the final canto, finished with 25 points, nine rebounds and four assists to strengthen his case for the Most Valuable Player award and even though no other NU cager ended up in double figures, eight more Bulldogs posted on the board for the Sampaloc-based squad.
"We were humbled in the last game (against Ateneo)," Altamirano added. "So I told the boys that we need to end the season right."
After giving up 61 in the loss to the Blue Eagles, NU limited the Archers to the second-lowest output this season, also the second-worst since the UAAP started to take stats using computerized technology in 2003.
Ironically, NU has the worst record when they scored only 39 points against Ateneo last Saturday.
NU began lethargic
NU was actually lethargic on offense in the first three quarters but pummeled La Salle, 24-5, in the last 10 minutes to gain momentum going into their last match with Final Four-bound University of Santo Tomas on Sunday.
"Today, we really asserted ourselves defensively," Altamirano shared after limiting the Archers to two-of-16 shooting from the field in the fourth.
Hobbled by foul trouble, Emmanuel Mbe only managed to score seven markers and pull down five boards for the Bulldogs, who were missing the services of skipper Jolas Terso (fractured pinky) and enforcer Choi Ignacio (ankle sprain).
Almond Vosotros was the lone bright spot for La Salle but the sophomore guard only had one point after halftime to the chagrin of the Archers faithful. Papot Paredes, Luigi dela Paz and Simon Atkins each scored four.
The scores
NU (56): Parks 25, Mbe 7, Javillonar 7, Neypes 5, Singh 4, Villamor 2, Labing-isa 2, Celda 2, Alolino 2, Rono 0, Khobuntin 0, Magat 0
La Salle (40): Vosotros 16, Paredes 4, Dela Paz 4, Atkins 4, Torres 3, Marata 3, Revilla 2, Villanueva 2, Mendoza 2, Van Opstal 0, Gotladera 0, Tampus 0
Quarters: 17-15, 26-22, 32-35, 56-40

China's inflation rate eases as economy cools

SHANGHAI (AP) — China's inflation rate retreated from a three-year high in August as food price increases moderated, suggesting Beijing may be able to hold off on further monetary tightening as it copes with a slowing global economy.
Consumer prices in the world's second-largest economy rose 6.2 percent over a year earlier, cooling from 6.5 percent in July, the National Statistics Bureau said Friday.
It said industrial production also slowed in August, rising 13.5 percent from the year before, compared with a 14 percent increase in July.
While inflation is still way above the government's 4 percent target for the year, the latest figures suggest that repeated interest rate hikes and other curbs meant to chill the overheated economy are taking hold. That could allow China's leaders greater leeway for policies aimed at keeping economic growth on track, as the U.S. and European outlook worsens.
Less pressure from inflation "would remove a significant barrier to further policy stimulus in the event of a slump in global demand," said Mark Williams, of Capital Economics, in a report.
Food prices, which comprise a large share of the consumer price index, climbed 13.4 percent, down from 14.8 percent in July. A 29.3 percent surge in prices for meat and poultry and 12.2 percent increase for staple grains, though, kept food price increases relatively strong.
"China's inflation is down, but not out," said Alistair Thornton, an economist for IHS Global Insight.
"The moderation in inflation is not broad based," he said, attributing it mainly to slower increases in pork prices, which still jumped 45.5 percent from a year earlier.
Many Chinese are stretching to make ends meet.
"Everything is so expensive," said Zhu Limei, a 30-year-old interior designer who is fretting over the 20 percent jump in the cost for her wedding banquet next month.
"For us young people, especially those not from rich families like us, life is really tough. Both my boyfriend and I work hard and try to cut costs, but it's still not enough," Zhu said.
Added to surging food prices are increases in non-food inflation, which rose to 3 percent in August. Among the highest increases was a 14.9 percent climb in costs for diesel and gas.
While visiting China earlier this week, World Bank President Robert Zoellick cautioned that inflation remains the country's key policy concern, echoing similar statements by Premier Wen Jiabao.
Surging prices also complicate Beijing's efforts to promote retail spending and other domestic consumption and reduce reliance on exports and investment. Spending on new factories and other investments has accounted for more than 40 percent of China's output over the past decade — several times that of the United States, Japan and other major economies.
Such spending rose 25 percent in January-August to 18.06 trillion yuan ($2.8 trillion), the statistics bureau reported. Lavish investments by local governments, which rose 28 percent so far this year to 17 trillion yuan ($2.7 trillion) is driving concern over the potential for a debt crisis given the likelihood of low returns on that spending, often on showcase construction projects.
Retail spending in August remained robust, climbing 17 percent to 1.5 trillion yuan ($234.4 billion), just slightly below the figure for July.
The U.S. and major European economies look likely to stagnate or go into reverse, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development said Thursday, slashing its growth forecasts for much of the developed world.
The fragility of major export markets could prod China into easing credit to keep demand at home steady, despite Wen's insistence that a formal change in policy will only happen once inflation has fallen significantly, said Williams.
"Nonetheless, we would not be surprised if controls on credit growth were quietly eased much sooner, particularly if the global outlook worsens," he said in a report issued before Friday's figures were released.

Nike releases famed "Back to the Future" shoe

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Nike is going back to the future.
The sneaker maker on Thursday said it has created a limited-edition shoe based on a glowing pair that appeared in the popular 1989 movie "Back to the Future II." The 2011 Nike Mag is designed to be an exact replica of the fictional sneaker, including a glowing Nike name on the strap. But unlike the movie version, these shoes won't lace themselves.
Nike will release 1,500 pairs of the 2011 Nike Mag sneaker for auction on eBay and donate all proceeds to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's disease research. Fox famously played Marty McFly in the "Back to the Future" time-travel trilogy, where he wore the shoes during a visit to the year 2015.
"It hasn't gone unnoted by us that there is something special about that shoe and, of course, the movie," said famed Nike shoe designer Tinker Hatfield, who helped design the original shoe and worked on the latest version.
Limited-edition shoes can draw as much, if not more mania, as a new movie or comic book release. Fans obsessively track the latest news and are willing to camp out all night or spending hundreds or more for a single pair online.
Nike's collector sneaker has been long awaited by shoe collectors and movie fans, who have been urging the company to make them ever since the movie was released. There were roughly eight or ten pairs used in the movie, some of which are in Nike's possession and a few that collectors somehow got their hands on.
Owning them, or even seeing a pair of them, has become a singular pursuit for some fans. There was even an online campaign a few years ago called "McFly 2015, Make it Happen" that gathered thousands of signatures to convince Nike to bring the McFly shoe back.
"This is the biggest thing that has happened to sneakers since Michael Jordan, hands down," said Matt Halfhill, an avid shoe collector who runs the website nicekicks.com and flew from Austin, Texas, to Los Angeles for the unveiling of the shoe on Thursday hours after Nike contacted him. "Other than the birth of one of my children, I wouldn't have missed this for anything."
Halfhill was among the revelers at Nike's 1980s-themed launch party Thursday in LA. A line stretched around the block for the invitation-only affair at Hollywood's Montalban theater, where tastemakers, sneaker freaks and Nike executives from around the world got a peek at the new collectible shoe. There was a DeLorean time machine parked outside, and inside, a wall of 210 of the light-up Nike Mag shoes (behind glass). A DJ spun '80s tunes before Hatfield took the stage to talk about the new shoe and officially open the eBay auction.
Nike Inc., based in Beaverton, Ore., decided more than four years ago to create the shoe, but was unsure when a pair would be ready. Unlike the shoes in the movie, the real-life versions had to be designed for day-to-day use. For instance, the design used in the movie required Fox to wear a battery pack with wires running down his pants to light the shoe, which was the best technology available at the time.
Hatfield said the Nike Mag has been difficult to develop and the electrical systems, which illuminate the shoe for up to five hours, have been one of the most challenging things the company has ever done in footwear. But the timing seemed perfect to bring the shoe back to support a bigger idea.
That Nike is releasing the shoe in 2011 enables it to take advantage of a matching grant for the foundation. Google founder Sergey Brin and his wife Anne Wojcicki have offered to match all donations to the Michael J. Fox Foundation up to $50 million through the end of 2012.
"The project is exciting to me because it brings together three very passionate audiences: the Parkinson's community, sneakerheads and 'Back to the Future' fans," Fox said in a statement. "With their support we can accelerate our objective of finding a cure for Parkinson's."8
Nike also has created a faux "lost scene" from the film to promote the shoe that includes original cast members Christopher Lloyd and Donald Fullilove, who will be joined by basketball star Kevin Durant and Nike's Hatfield.
The auction begins Thursday and will end Sept. 18.

Nicole Richie: Jessica Simpson Is Someone I Really Respect

Nicole Richie is speaking out against claims that she is at war with Jessica Simpson on the set of "Fashion Star". During a phone interview with "On Air with Ryan Seacrest" on Thursday, August 8, the "House of Harlow" designer set the record straight by insisting that she respects her fellow mentor on the new reality show.

"Well, I'll tell you right now that that couldn't be further from the truth," the 29-year-old told Ryan Seacrest. "I actually love and adore Jessica. ... I've known her for years, first of all. I already knew who she was as a person, and who she is, is someone who is very kind, very sweet, and extremely smart and a great business woman. And someone that I really respect."

The feud rumors were sparked by a recent report from Us Weekly that claimed there's "definite friction" between Nicole and Jessica. One insider said, "They chat only when they need to, and they have wildly different opinions about style," while another alleged that Nicole "thinks Jessica doesn't have much of a high-fashion eye" and "makes snarky comments about Jessica's outfits".

It was further reported that Jessica "really doesn't care what Nicole thinks" because she "believes she know how to make clothes for all kinds of women." During the chat with Ryan, Nicole reacted, "I can understand that's probably exciting to read about, but as far as that being the truth, that couldn't be farther from it. I couldn't love someone or respect someone more."

As for "Fashion Star" itself, Nicole gushed, "I'm really excited, and it's something that I'm extremely honored to be a part of." She added, "We have a lot of fun on it, I have to say. A lot of fun," before promising, "And I think that you're going to see different sides to everyone for sure."

Ali Lohan's drastic new look

Updated 1:05 p.m. PT: At 17 years old, Ali Lohan isn't just Lindsay Lohan's little sister, she's also a burgeoning model. To that end, Ali recently landed a modeling contract with Next Model Management, and she was the face of her big sister's 6126 clothing line.
Most recently though, talk about Ali has centered around whether she's had plastic surgery. As you can see from the composite photo, while lighting and diet could have something to do with subtle differences, there is no doubt her face looks much more chiseled. We asked her rep if there's any truth to the chatter and have yet to hear back. But big sis Lindsay did talk to E! News.
"She has never," Lindsay told E! exclusively regarding all the talk that Ali must have turned to plastic surgery to achieve her so-called "new" look. E! reports that a source close to the family says, "Ali just lost a lot of weight."

Evolution of Mobile Phones - First Ever Cellular Telephone

Mobile phones today are the best to use these days as compared to laptops or PCs, because of their extreme portability and efficient specifications. The latest technology which smartphones of today use, seemed once 'impossible' to exist. Just try to remember the time when you used to have a mobile or saw someone using those old big Nokia handsets, a laugh or a smile is what you are going to get thinking about their huge size.

Lets look into how it all started and how we got the mobile phones in our hands. Do you you know which was the first cellular telephone ever to be used? And what was the weight of it? See below to know the answers.

To put the idea cellular communications  into reality, Martin Cooper set up a base in New York and a prototype cellular telephone, the Motorola DynaTAC which you can see in the picture below. At a public demonstration in 3rd April, 1973 a 30-ounce phone was used , Martin Cooper called up his rivals at for the very first call AT&T Bell. You can see the specifications of the DynaTAC below.

New Method for Diabetes Detection

A new method to detect diabetes, even before symptoms occur, is being developed by a team of endocrinologists, engineers and microbiologists. A device projects light to the skin which measures levels of blood sugar, or the presence of advanced glycation endproducts. This device is called The Scout. Different wavelengths is flashed to the skin to determine diabetes risk. This will help patients go on a preventive health maintenance program. With this method, diabetes can actually be prevented. It is already being tested in several US hospitals. The new method is expected to cost about the same as existing diabetes testing methods.

Medical breakthrough for heart repair

In a medical breakthrough a man’s heart was saved through the use of a breakthrough medical technology. The man, John Christy, is the first person in the United States to undergo this procedure. The new procedure utilizes stem cells in helping repair the arteries all throughout a person’s body.
Christy was suffering from coronary artery disease at a very advanced stage. What was done to him was to insert his own specific stem cells into his body during a CABG surgery. The stem cells are used to grow new blood vessels in the heart. This is a revolutionary procedure that can save millions of lives when it is further developed and become widely available.

Quantum computer chips pass key milestones

Quantum computer users may soon have to wrestle with their own version of the "PC or Mac?" question. A design based on superconducting electrical circuits has now performed two benchmark feats, suggesting it will be a serious competitor to rival setups using photons or ions.
"The number of runners in the race has just gone up to three," says Andrew White of the University of Queensland, Australia, who builds quantum computers based on photons and was not involved in the new result.
The defining feature of a quantum computer is that it uses quantum bits or qubits. Unlike ordinary bits, these can exist in multiple states at once, known as a superposition. They can also be entangled with each other, so their quantum states are linked, allowing them to be in a sort of "super" superposition of quantum states.
This means quantum computers could perform multiple calculations simultaneously, making them much faster than ordinary computers at some tasks.
Previously, setups using photons or trapped ions as qubits have made the most headway in early calculations. Now Matteo Mariantoni of the University of California, Santa Barbara, and colleagues have boosted the computing power of a rival design, first demonstrated in 2003, that uses tiny, superconducting wires instead.

Wire loops

Mariantoni's team used a chip embedded with micrometre-sized loops of wire made of a mixture of aluminium and rhenium. When these wires were cooled to within a whisker of absolute zero, they became superconducting, meaning their electrons coupled up as structures called "cooper pairs".
The pairs in each wire were made to resonate as an ensemble. Because each ensemble could exist as a superposition of multiple different resonating states, they acted as qubits.
Mariantoni's team entangled these qubit wires using a second type of wire, known as a bus, that snaked all around the chip. First they tuned this bus so that it took on some of the quantum information in one of the qubits. Then they transferred this information to further qubit wires, thus entangling the qubits.

Benchmark tests

The design made strides in solving calculations often used as benchmarks for testing quantum computers' capabilities.
It ran a calculation known as the quantum Fourier transform, which is a central component of the most famous quantum algorithm, known as Shor's. If Shor's were run on a system with enough qubits, it would allow huge numbers to be factorised quickly. That has not happened yet, but if it ever did, it would cause many current encryption systems to break down, since they rely on the fact that ordinary computers can't do this.
The researchers also used entangled qubits to create a system known as a "Toffoli OR phase gate", which is a critical step towards building codes that do quantum error correction. This required entangling three qubits – a first for superconducting quantum circuits. "Getting three bits to play well together is hard," says White.

Ordinary chips

The advances may seem like baby steps, since both Shor's algorithm and the Toffoli gate have been realised with relatively low numbers of photons and trapped ions.
But the reason the new result is exciting is that it could be hard to scale up these systems, which tend to be delicate and require specialised equipment, while the superconducting system uses chips like an ordinary computer. "The beautiful thing about a solid circuit is that it's something you can write using lithographic technology," says White. "It looks much easier than say ion traps or photonic approaches."
But future quantum computers might not come down to an either/or choice like that between a Mac and a PC. Instead, true to their quantum nature, they may be "superpositions" of different designs. "I don't think anybody knows what the best architecture will be," says White. "Probably we will end up using hybrids of the various approaches."
