UST completes the Final Four

The University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers claimed the last position in the Final Four as they subdued a gritty Far Eastern University Tamaraws, 77-73, in the homestretch of the UAAP Season 74 eliminations phase at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, Thursday, Sep. 8.
Rookie Kevin Ferrer and veteran Jeric Fortuna led the Tigers in crucial late-game clutches while Karim Abdul finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds to save the day for UST and tie with the Tamaraws at third spot in the win-lose ladder.
The España five led by as much as 18 points in the first half but FEU's Roger Pogoy and Chris Exciminiano came out of nowhere, conniving for 16 third-quarter points to cut the lead of UST to only two before the fourth quarter, 55-53.
"We should be composed lalo na 'pag naghahabol ang kalaban," said UST mentor Pido Jarencio. "We learned our lesson from the first round."
Already assured of a Final Four slot when the Archers dropped their do-or-die game earlier, the Tigers strode confidently on court as the two Jerics, Fortuna and Teng, scored seven and six points early to end the first quarter with a 12 point cushion, 23-11.
Abdul then found his rhythm in the second canto as he dominated the paint, scoring nine of his 20 points to enter the dugout with a 45-32 lead for UST.
FEU fights the good fight
But the Tamaraws returned with a vengeance in the third as they outscored UST, 21-10, courtesy of rookie Pogoy and hotshot point guard Exciminiano.
Entering the final quarter down by just two, reigning MVP Ryan Roose Garcia caught fire early in the fourth, sinking a couple of critical jumpers to steal the lead, 69-66. The Tigers then turned to Chris Camus who scored five of his nine points in the quarter to regain the driver's seat with the clock ticking down.
The UST triad of Abdul, Ferrer, and Fortuna proved to be too hot to handle as they thwarted every FEU attempt to steal the game with steady shooting from the foul line.
UST's defensive plan
"Sa mga players ito, eh. Guide lang nila ako. Sila ang nagpanalo," added Jarencio whose defensive plan limited FEU in the dying moments of the game.
Ferrer tallied in 19 points and 12 rebounds while Fortuna scored 19 on a woeful two-of-seven from the three-point territory.
Garcia on the other hand top-scored for FEU with a quiet double-double in 17 points and 10 rebounds while Pogoy scored his season-high 14 points on top of six rebounds and two steals.
The Tigers can force a playoff for the Number 2 spot if they tie with the Adamson Falcons at 9-5.
The scores
UST 77: Adbul 20, Ferrer 19, Fortuna 14, Teng 11, Camus 9, Vigil 2, Lo 2, Tan 0, Sheriff 0, Lao 0, Pe 0, Ungria 0.
FEU 73: Garcia 17, Pogoy 14, Romeo 12, Exciminiano 10, Ramos 8, Tolomia 6, Escoto 3, Foronda 3, Cruz 0, Bringas 0.

NBA player Smith in talks for record China deal: report

NBA free agent guard J.R. Smith is near a deal to play the coming season for Shanxi of the Chinese Basketball Association for a Chinese league-record $3 million, Yahoo Sports reported Thursday.
Citing unnamed sources, the website reported that seven-year NBA standout Smith, who turns 26 on Friday, would lose his chance at unrestricted free agency ahead of the NBA season if he makes the deal to play in China.
Smith, who played for the Denver Nuggets the past five seasons, has averaged 12.5 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists a game over his NBA career.
The news comes as NBA players and club owners meet to try and reach a deal to end a lockout by owners that has shut down the league for the first time since 1999 and threatens to wipe out all or part of the season set to open November 1.
The Nuggets have already lost forward Wilson Chandler to China's Zhejiang Guangsha and Smith, like Chandler, would not be able to sign with NBA clubs until they return from China.
Chinese clubs no longer sign NBA players who want opt out clauses to return to North America before the Chinese season ends in March.

NU chases La Salle out of Final Four

After getting booted out of the Final Four race last weekend, National University made sure it dragged De La Salle down with them to the pit of also-rans.
In an emphatic 56-40 victory in today's Season 74 UAAP game at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, the NU Bulldogs
crushed the DLSU Green Archers in the fourth with a game-closing 20-1 blast. It was NU's fifth win in 13 games, which tied them with La Salle at fifth place.
"Our mindset was to play as if we were trying to qualify for the Final Four," NU Coach Eric Altamirano told reporters. "We wanted to earn again the respect of the league."
With La Salle leading 39-36 with seven minutes remaining, rookies Bobby Ray Parks and Kyle Neypes led an onslaught that turned the game around and sent the Archers reeling to their second absence from the semifinals in the last three seasons.
Archers snag second-lowest output of season
Parks, sizzling in the final canto, finished with 25 points, nine rebounds and four assists to strengthen his case for the Most Valuable Player award and even though no other NU cager ended up in double figures, eight more Bulldogs posted on the board for the Sampaloc-based squad.
"We were humbled in the last game (against Ateneo)," Altamirano added. "So I told the boys that we need to end the season right."
After giving up 61 in the loss to the Blue Eagles, NU limited the Archers to the second-lowest output this season, also the second-worst since the UAAP started to take stats using computerized technology in 2003.
Ironically, NU has the worst record when they scored only 39 points against Ateneo last Saturday.
NU began lethargic
NU was actually lethargic on offense in the first three quarters but pummeled La Salle, 24-5, in the last 10 minutes to gain momentum going into their last match with Final Four-bound University of Santo Tomas on Sunday.
"Today, we really asserted ourselves defensively," Altamirano shared after limiting the Archers to two-of-16 shooting from the field in the fourth.
Hobbled by foul trouble, Emmanuel Mbe only managed to score seven markers and pull down five boards for the Bulldogs, who were missing the services of skipper Jolas Terso (fractured pinky) and enforcer Choi Ignacio (ankle sprain).
Almond Vosotros was the lone bright spot for La Salle but the sophomore guard only had one point after halftime to the chagrin of the Archers faithful. Papot Paredes, Luigi dela Paz and Simon Atkins each scored four.

NU (56): Parks 25, Mbe 7, Javillonar 7, Neypes 5, Singh 4, Villamor 2, Labing-isa 2, Celda 2, Alolino 2, Rono 0, Khobuntin 0, Magat 0
